Well that did not go our way . . . . . . I handed the shield over to Emma Cowan who kindly accepted it on behalf of the Wisbech St. Mary team.
Hey, it’s only a game of bowls and we did put up a good fight, ending up 92 to 84 shots down.
The hospitality we received from Wisbech St. Mary was very pleasant and the snacks provided at the mid-evening refreshment break were very welcome 😊.
It was a shame Kevin could not make the evening, Jane did a sterling job and kept the evening moving with her band of little helpers. We wish Kevin a speedy return to his jolly self, events like last night’s certainly need characters like Kevin in the room.
We had some good tight games throughout the evening as reflected in the overall result, I also managed to assist my skip and lead to a first game hammering but by golly did we make up for it in the last game. I still don’t fully understand why my bowls don’t do as I expect them to, somebody once tried telling me it’s the way I chuck um!
It was nice to see our teams walk away from several games with that victory smile. With the evening going so quickly and me trying to play I did not manage to get as much individual game information as I normally do. But still I believe we all enjoyed the evening as did our ‘franchise’ players, Malcolm Spriggs and Mike Carter. Thank you to Margaret Pateman, Marie Humphrey and John Symons who crossed the gap to join Sutton St. Edmund for the evening, I was in the team with Margaret and the way she handled some of the ‘Oh, playing for them are you’ comments was fantastic and at times extremely funny, my sort of comedy.
It is difficult arranging these events in the summer and especially in the holiday months of July and August but we got there. We will try for an earlier month next year for the return game at Sutton St. Edmund, I’ll try to avoid Ibiza themed weekends 😊 😊 😊, an inhouse joke only a couple of us will get.
A quick question for you all ‘Why do some people have to win, and take the game so seriously’? Maybe it’s me, but I see these evening’s as a bit of fun with bowls thrown in.
Many thanks to those of you who turned out to yet another great evening of Short Mat Bowls, here’s looking forward to next year’s return match already.
Have yourself a grand safe productive day.
Kind regards,
Alan B.
